Barrie Winter Planning

Snow Movement Matters More on a Metal Roof

The City of Barrie notes that Barrie receives more snow and has more snow-removal days than communities in the GTA.

On a sloped metal roof, that makes snow retention, roof transitions, drainage, and the areas below the roof important planning details.

Entrances, Walkways and Driveways

Snow guards should be considered where sliding snow could reach doors, paths, parked vehicles, patios, or other frequently used areas.

Valleys and Lower Roof Sections

Connected roof planes can collect snow and meltwater differently, especially around valleys, dormers, chimneys, and lower sections.

Gutters, Edges and Drainage

Roof edges and drainage paths should be reviewed together so snow retention does not create a new problem around gutters or discharge points.

Before Installation

What Should Be Reviewed Before the Quote

Two roofs with a similar area can require different preparation, detail work, and installation time. The existing roof, roof shape, and site conditions should be reviewed before the scope is confirmed.

Existing Roof and Deck Condition

The existing shingles or cedar, roof deck, ventilation, and any known leaks should be assessed before the installation scope is confirmed.

Roof Shape and Detailed Areas

Valleys, chimneys, skylights, vents, changing roof levels, and other transitions affect panel fitting, flashing work, and installation time.

Roof Access and Preparation

Roof access, material delivery, old roof removal, deck repairs, and site conditions can all affect the final estimate.

A clean finish matters. 👌

After masonry work was completed around the chimney, the standing seam roof flashings were left covered in cement residue and construction dirt. Our crew carefully cleaned and restored the metal flashings, bringing them back to their original appearance without damaging the finish.

Proper cleanup and attention to detail make all the difference on a premium metal roofing project.

Low slope? No problem.

We recently completed the installation of a double lock standing seam metal roofing system at a Muskoka marina. Designed specifically for low-slope applications, the double lock profile delivers exceptional weather resistance, watertight performance, and long-term durability in demanding waterfront environments.

As part of the assembly, we installed 1" rigid insulation to improve thermal performance, followed by 18 GA galvanized steel Z-bars to create a solid structural attachment system for the standing seam panels. This assembly provides excellent strength, ventilation, and long-term performance while maintaining a clean architectural appearance.

From precision panel fabrication to expert installation, every detail was completed to ensure a roofing system built to withstand the harsh Canadian climate and demanding waterfront conditions.

A standing seam roof isn't just about appearance—it's an investment in performance, energy efficiency, and decades of reliable protection.

Barrie Metal Roofing FAQ

They are often worth considering on sloped metal roofs above entrances, walkways, driveways, decks, and other areas where sliding snow could create a safety or property concern.

Metal roofing remains low-maintenance, but inspections are useful after severe winter weather. Snow guards, valleys, gutters, roof edges, vents, and flashing should be checked for damage or blocked drainage.

Yes, but the shingles, roof deck, ventilation, structure, and installation method should be reviewed first. Cedar roofs and damaged decking may need a different preparation approach.

The City of Barrie lists replacing without structural changes among work that may not require a building permit. A metal roof replacement can involve different materials, loads, or structural work, so requirements should be confirmed for the specific property.

Standing seam gives a cleaner modern profile, while metal tile keeps a more traditional appearance. The right option depends on roof shape, home style, colour preference, existing roof condition, and budget.
